Designing a motivational system for an educational platform requires balance.
The challenge was to encourage engagement without turning learning into a game for the sake of rewards. Progress needed to be visible, but never overwhelming. The experience had to resonate with very different student profiles and age groups, while also providing real value for teachers. Rather than adding complexity, the goal was clear: build a system that feels simple, integrated, and purposeful.
Achievements only matter if they are easy to access and easy to understand.
To support that, we designed a dedicated “Badges” page, accessible directly from the main navigation. This page acts as a visual snapshot of each student’s journey, where every badge represents a concrete accomplishment. Newly earned badges appear through subtle notifications in the top menu, reinforcing positive behavior at the exact moment it happens. Recognition becomes part of the daily flow of learning, not a separate destination students have to search for.
Badges were never intended to be purely decorative.
Each one is designed to acknowledge meaningful learning behaviors already measured on the platform. Some reward steady progress and consistency over time. Others encourage engagement, exploration, and the courage to try again. Seasonal and challenge-based badges introduce moments of surprise throughout the school year. Because all badges are triggered by transparent and existing metrics, students always understand why they earned them. This clarity creates trust and reinforces motivation.
Motivation does not look the same at every age.
While the logic behind earning badges remains consistent, the visual language evolves depending on the school level. Primary and secondary students interact with the same system, but with visuals adapted to their context. This approach keeps the experience relevant and engaging, without fragmenting the platform or increasing cognitive load.
Motivation is not something experienced only by students.
We created a dedicated progress view for teachers, allowing them to see which badges students have earned and which milestones are still ahead. This visibility transforms badges into a pedagogical tool, supporting encouragement, recognition, and meaningful conversations in the classroom. Badges become more than individual rewards. They become a shared language between students and teachers.
With this new badge system, Scolab introduces a motivational framework that is simple to understand and accessible to all learners.
It aligns naturally with the behaviors we want to encourage, such as consistency, effort, and perseverance. Most importantly, it is fully integrated into a living learning experience that feels engaging rather than intrusive. More than a reward system, this is a new way of telling students, clearly and consistently: You are making progress. And it matters.
Next projects.
